The scrapers are generally a heavy-duty wheel tractor machines
which are used for earthmoving and other similar operations. They are
used in many construction projects and are capable to perform a
variety of tasks. There are several scraper manufacturers on the
market, and the most popular ones are: Caterpillar, Terex, ICON, Fox
and etc. However, the scrapers from Caterpillar are considered as the
most powerful and effective on the construction site. From its wide
range of construction machines and equipment, Caterpillar offers 3
scraper models:
coal bowl scrapers, elevating scrapers, and open bowl
scrapers. The scrapers from Caterpillar can be seen on every large
construction site all over the world, and they are used for various
applications. Caterpillar also includes tandem powered scrapers in
its product line. These machines are powered by two twin engines and
are capable to handle steep grades and to perform efficiently on poor
ground conditions. The tandem powered scrapers from Caterpillar can
move independently or with the help of push dozers.
The scrapers from Caterpillar are also equipped with pull-push
arrangement that uses hydraulically actuated bail, a cushion plate
placed on the front end of the tractor, and a hook which is attached
on the rear end of the scraper. The pull-push arrangement allows two
scrapers to be linked together during loading operations. Caterpillar
also offers scrapers with an auger arrangement that increases the
self loading capability and the dust control. Regardless of the
scraper model, Caterpillar states that its self-propelled scrapers
are designed with the latest technology and include innovative
features such as hydraulic joysticks that replace the buttons, levers
and all other switches that can confuse the operators.
Other well-known manufacturers that offer self-propelled scrapers
on the market are Terex and Fox. Terex offers two heavy-duty scraper
models that come with seven speed electronically operated
transmission system. This transmission system includes sequential
bump shifts that allow for smooth and low effort speed changes. The
Terex scrapers have a positive roll out ejector which is operated by
a single hydraulic cylinder. The combined sliding floor and the
ejector end gate are controlled by two double-acting, single-stage
hydraulic cylinders.
The main scraper model from Fox is actually an elevating scraper
that is pulled by a 110 horsepower Caterpillar tractor. This scraper
comes with a bowl that has a fixed edge. This fixed edge bowl allows
for good grading results on the ground. The design of this tractor
mounted scraper gives the operator an excellent view of the working
area. All Fox scrapers come with three axles, two are mounted on the
tractor part and one on the bowl.
